THE PIST, DEFIANCE, AND PONX ATTAX
After hitting a low point in the late 80s and early 90s, hardcore punk came back strong in the mid 1990s. Some bands chose to go a commercial route, spawning the hollowed out version of punk promoted by the Warped tour. More imporatantly, a handful of dedicated punks created a new underground scene infused with a DIY ethic that was completely separated from the mainstream music business. This scene spawned some of the most energetic, sincere and exciting punk rock since the heroic era of the late 70s and early 80s.
Two bands that spearheaded this resurgence of punk will return to Minneapolis on the last Saturday in July. The Pist from Connecticut were one of the most popular punk bands of the 90s, touring hard and releasing tons of recorded output, including the all killer, no filler LP "Ideas are Bulletproof". The Pist got back together to play a few shows in some of the cities where they had the most fun in the 90s. Lucky for us, Minneapolis was on that list, no one who was there will forget their show at the Bombshelter.
Defiance from Portland, similarly toured and put out several now classic records in the 90s. Their hard charging punk sound harkened back to the early 80's UK punk scene, as did their leather and studs look. Defiance was the band on stage during the now infamous Bombshelter Police Riot, this time they'll get to finish their set.
Bedlam Theatre has been an excellent space for the local arts and music scene, and this might be the last chance to see a punk show at Bedlam because they're leaving their current space in early September. This show is sponsored by Extreme Noise Records, DIY punk music collective as part of its ongoing 15 year anniversary celebration.
