Great Integration: A Chamber Hip-Hop Opera at Le Petit Trianon
ENSEMBLE MIK NAWOOJ IN THREE CONCERTS IN SAN FRANCISCO, BERKELEY AND SAN JOSE
AUG. 21, AUG. 28 AND SEPT. 19 FEATURING COMPOSER/PIANIST JOOWAN KIM'S GREAT INTEGRATION: A CHAMBER HIP-HOP OPERA
San Francisco, CA, July 19, 2010 JooWan Kim and Ensemble Mik Nawooj have announced a summer and fall series of performances in San Francisco, Berkeley and San Jose featuring the highly successful chamber hip-hop opera Great Integration; which sold out at ODC Commons in San Francisco with Push Dance Company in June. Kim and ensemble will perform the dynamically forging new musical style that collides genres from hip-hop and jazz to pop and classical. JooWan Kim and Ensemble Mik Nawooj will perform Great Integration and other works. Performers include Kim, vocalist Christopher Nicholas and MC Kirby Dominant in the groundbreaking, genre-blurring style that has brought Kim and Ensemble Mik Nawooj to the attention of legends like Ahmad Jamal. Performances will be held on Saturday, August 21, at 9 pm at the Red Poppy Art House in San Francisco; Saturday, August 28, at 8 pm at Giorgi Gallery in Berkeley; and Sunday, September 19, at 2:30 pm at Le Petit Trianon in San Jose. [EDITOR NOTE: complete venue and ticket information may be found at the end of this release.]
The concerts are presented by Golden Fetus Records. Information: http://www.goldenfetus.com/ Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Great-Integration-A-Chamber-Hip-Hop-Opera/170827364499
Great Integration is steeped in an electrifyingly contemporary alloy of Taoist tradition, hip-hop music and poetry; forward-looking philosophy and arresting performance presentation. In this penultimate installment of the ongoing Mik Nawooj saga, Black Swordsman of dominance is chosen as the one to trigger the Great Integration of the world before the arrival of Celestial King. When all the five lords of material realm are conquered, the old world we know will merge into one and the Great Celestial King will descend from ninth heaven to wipe out all the impurities of the world, thus creating a new world with brand new paradigm. It is an allegory that Kim finds particularly apt for the approaching end times prophesied by the Mayan and other cultures in 2012 and, more importantly, for the new era that these tribulations will usher in.
Kim's music incorporates elements from hip-hop and classical, creating a unique hybrid that is in the spirit of Gershwin and Piazzolla, both of whom pushed and blurred the boundaries of vernacular and art music. Backed by his own Ensemble Mik Nawooj, featuring MC Kirby Dominant, JooWan Kim succeeds in accomplishing what most musicians want to but are unable to; creating a new kind of music that combines genres that are seemingly incompatible with each other.
About JooWan Kim and Ensemble Mik Nawooj
Music legend Ahmad Jamal said, "In this day and age, for an artist to succeed, the talent has to be either exceptional or very different. JooWan Kim is both; exceptional and very different."
Ensemble Mik Nawooj (EMN) performs innovative music of composer/pianist JooWan Kim, who blends such genres as classical, hip-hop, film music, jazz, and pop into a unique musical hybrid. Since the first public performance in spring of 2005, EMN has gathered much attention and shock from various music fans for its uncompromising blend of rap and classical. Ensemble Mik Nawooj has successfully merged the vernacular with traditional Western European music without losing the integrity of both genres. EMN, however, is neither a hip-hop band nor classical ensemble. It lies in the common place where all music lives and breathes, expanding and transmuting its sound.
JooWan Kim is a Taoist/Zen practitioner as well as a connoisseur of fine tea. In 2006, JooWan signed a management contract with the Jazz Legend Ahmad Jamal (2006-2009). In 2007, he received a lifetime endorsement from the Steinway and Sons Piano Company.
Christopher Nicholas received a dual bachelors degree in Songwriting and Vocal Performance from the Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA. He was awarded the Berklee Achievement Scholarship and received an honorable mention for his original song, "I Write these Words" in the Berklee Songwriting Contest. Later, legendary jazz pianist Ahmad Jamal praised this piece calling it "a master piece". In 2004, Nicholas was granted the Patsy C. & Fred W. Patterson College of Music Scholarship to the University of North Texas in Denton, TX. While in attendance, Nicholas was a featured soloist on the album "In Case you Missed it" with the U.N.T Jazz Singers directed by Paris Rutherford. After completing his masters degree in Jazz Studies in 2009, he joined JooWan Kim as co-founder of Golden Fetus Records.
