Sweet, naïve Sandy Dumbrowski and Danny Zuko, the leader of the crude and rough Greasers, meet over the summer and fall in love. As school is about to begin, they part ways, thinking they will never see each other again. The first day of school arrives at Rydell High and as Danny reunites with his Greaser pals and begins describing the awesome chick he dated over the summer, Sandy is beginning her first day at Rydell as a new student. She is sitting at lunch with her next door neighbor, Jan, a Pink Lady, and being introduced to the group of girls when Sandy and Danny have an awkward run-in with each other.
Patty Simcox, the ultimate cheerleader and busy-body tries to get Sandy involved with the cheerleading squad to distract her from Danny Zuko. As a challenge, Danny tries out for the track team as a way of showing Sandy that he is sincere about working hard and commitments. Convinced that the Greasers are good-for-nothing boys, the Pink Ladies invite Sandy to a sleepover as a formal invitation into their group. Sandy can't quite handle their "experienced" views of men and fashion and chooses to isolate herself.
The big school dance approaches and everyone seems to be pairing up, but Danny and Sandy have still not reconciled. In an act of desperation, Danny agrees to dance with Kenickie's blind date, Cha Cha DiGregorio, during the school dance competition. Danny and Cha Cha win the competition, and Sandy is left home alone, sulking.
Everyone returns to school the next day and it turns out that Cha Cha was the girlfriend of a rival gang leader, the boys get ready to rumble, only to have a no-show and leave Frenchy, one of the Pink Ladies, contemplating her future over a milkshake at their favorite hang-out, the Burger Palace. In her day dream, a guardian angel sings to her about the importance of giving up beauty school and going back to high school to get her degree. A changed and determined woman, Frenchy goes back to school and ultimately helps Sandy with a major transformation.
Sandy has the epiphany that she needs to wake up and shed the sheltered, little girl act, to become a woman. She sings about her devotion to Danny and these changes in the ballad, "Hopelessly Devoted to You," and seeks out the beautician assistance of Frenchy. Sandy approaches Danny and the rest of the Greasers, now a "tough chick, Greaser's dream" and challenges him to earn her respect and love.
