Food as Medicine- Spice Rack Medicine
Geeta and Ellen come together again to present some delicious ideas for taking care of yourself this winter.  We will utilize herbs, botanicals, spices and grains, and Geeta will add some information about supplements that can help as well.

Chef and owner Ellen King and integrative family physician Dr. Geeta Maker-Clark have been teaching these popular classes for years, and have lectured together at national medical conferences, medical schools and many community events and gatherings. Their combined knowledge and passion for what they do comes through in every class!

Ellen King is a classically trained chef and food activist.  She has worked in various restaurants in Seattle with a speciality in French, Mediterranean and Vegetarian foods. Ms. King attended a sustainable farm school in Eastern Washington where she learned to farm organically, cook seasonally and bake bread in a wood fired oven.
Ellen has always been passionate about promoting local and sustainable ingredients. Her culinary work led her to food activism and education to promote healthy, local eating in the general public. Ellen was a founding board member of the Seattle Chapter of Chefs Collaborative, a non-profit food advocacy group for chefs. She volunteered as a chef instructor for after school programs in Seattle community gardens (P-Patches) and taught culinary classes for adults. She relocated to Evanston 4 years ago and continued  her food advocacy work by chairing the Evanston Backyard Chicken Committee. In June 2013, Ellen opened Hewn Bakery in Evanston that focuses on hand forged, naturally leavened breads and seasonal salads and sandwiches.
Ellen is a graduate of the Seattle Culinary Academy.  Ms. King is also a graduate of the University of Maine with an MA in American History, and a graduate of St. Norbert College with a BA in History.  Ellen studied at the Quillisascut Farm School in Rice, WA and the University of Oslo, Norway.  Ellen currently serves on the Evanston Environment Board and is a member of the Bread Bakers Guild of America,  Women Chefs and Restauranteurs and Chefs Collaborative.

Dr. Geeta Maker-Clark is a board certified integrative family physician,  coordinator of Integrative Medical Education and Clinical Assistant Professor at Pritzker School of Medicine, University of Chicago and faculty at the U of C NorthShore Family Medicine Residency program.

Geeta received her undergraduate degree in English Literature at Northwestern University and received her MD from Rush Medical College in Chicago, IL, where she was president of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society.

Dr. Maker-Clark has always held the belief that any meaningful healing must involve the mind, body and spirit, and that whenever possible the most natural and least invasive intervention serves the highest good of the patient. She has pursued studies with traditional healers in India, midwives, herbalists and energy healers. She has found that the practice of Integrative Medicine, bringing together the best of conventional medicine and alternative therapies, offers an opportunity for healing, wellness and disease prevention that neither modality can achieve alone. For this reason, she spent 2 years training at the University of Arizona Fellowship in Integrative Medicine, under the supervision and mentorship of Dr. Andrew Weil, a world renowned pioneer in this field. Dr. Maker-Clark relies heavily on the use of food as medicine in her approach to healing, as well as herbs, botanicals, breathwork, conventional medicines and healing practitioners in the community. She has taught on the use of food as medicine at hospitals, schools, residencies, conferences, farmers' markets and yoga festivals, and recently travelled with Dr. Weil to Cuba to study the integrative medical system there.
