The American Porch I: Selections (and Adventures) from the Historic American Buildings Survey
From the most imposing institutional buildings with monumental classical porticoes to the humblest vernacular houses with simple wooden sheds, the porch has played a significant role throughout the past 400 years of American architectural history. Join Mark Schara, AIA, of the National Park Service, Washington, D.C., as he provides a concise overview and survey of the variety of roles and forms that the American porch has assumed, drawing upon the unparalleled resources of the HABS collection at the Library of Congress, as well as his personal experiences in supervising architectural documentation projects across the United States. This is the first in a three-part lecture series on the history and cultural significance of the porch in America, organized by Johns Hopkins' Homewood Museum for the 2010 Baltimore Architecture Week.
