Matilda's Waltz
Matilda's Waltz is about the men in the Armed Forces who in 1944 came by the millions to Hawaii to wait to be sent overseas to the Pacific war zone. It is also about the people, the Whitney family, who live in Hawaii on whom the 2nd World War has placed great demands. It is about their heroism and struggle, their ambition, pettiness, garden-variety decency, racism, meanness, generosity, anger, cynicism, sorrow, pain, and most of all about their love. It is about people living through a difficult time as best they could.
In 1944, Hawaii was a territory of the United States, a colonial possession. Metaphorically Hawaii was our border of World War II in the Pacific, an ultimate frontier, the edge of our world.
