Disability Access

Attendees will be provided a historical background and current state of accessibility law. The program will also prime attendees on how to attempt to comply with the confusion of conflicting requirements. There will also be a review of the most common accessibility law issues and pitfalls.

Michael J. Murtaugh received his undergraduate degree from the University of Cincinnati (BA, 1970) and his law degree from the UCLA School of Law (JD, 1973), and his practice focuses on counseling and representing design professionals concerning liability, contract, firm ownership and employment matters. He frequently lectures to professional organizations such as ACEC, AIAOC and SEAOSC; and he is an honorary member the AIA Orange County.

Afshan Afshar, AIA, CASp, CID, LEED AP BD+C received both her undergraduate and Master of Architecture degrees from the University of Michigan. Afshan is a well-rounded Architect with experience in multiple market sectors and project types including higher education, civic, corporate, retail, and hospitality. She has served as Project Architect, Project Manager, Project Designer, Technical Director, and Access Analyst/Advisor throughout her 32 year career. Afshan has completed numerous accessibility projects for both public and private entities in Los Angeles, Orange and San Diego counties since 1991, where her career focus on access compliance began. Afshan is CASp certified, and a known presence in the community for her expertise in ADA Standards and Building Code Accessibility Regulations.
