stART at Royal/T - The Diorama Project
Join us for The Diorama Project, a fanciful workshop presented by artists Seonna Hong, Ana Serrano, and stART. Seonna, whose work is in the current exhibition at Royal/T, will be reading from her pop-up book 'Animus' and Ana will be giving a presentation about her artwork and process. This will be followed by a workshop inspired by Seonna's book and Ana's quixotic and colorful buildings. Under the gentle guidance of the artists, participants will use imagination and collage to create narrative dioramas that tell their own stories. This event is open to both adults and children. Take part in this fun, once in a lifetime opportunity to have real artists help you expose your inner artist. Come prepared with a shoebox and an open mind.
About Seonna:
Born in Southern California in 1973, but shuffled around from city to city throughout her childhood, Seonna developed a sensitivity to her ever changing surroundings and learned to communicate with her art. Her quietly narrative and autobiographical paintings often depict the alienation she felt in childhood as well as in adult life. After graduating with a B.A. in Art from Cal State University Long Beach, she continued to hone her craft teaching art to children and was greatly influenced by her time with them. Hong's work has also been shaped by her experience in Animation to which she received an Emmy Award for Individual Achievement in Production Design for her work on "My Life as a Teenage Robot" (Nickelodeon) in 2004. Hong has exhibited at Sixspace in Los Angeles, Oliver Kamm / 5BE Gallery in New York and KaiKai Kiki in Tokyo, Japan. She was a recipient of a 2006 Joan Mitchell Foundation grant, and had her first solo museum show at the Knoxville Museum of Art in 2006. Her first book "Animus" (Baby Tattoo Books) is now in it's third printing.
About Ana:
Ana Serrano is a first generation Mexican American born in Los Angeles, California in 1983. Inspired by both of the cultural contexts in her life, she creates work utilizing a variety of mediums including drawing, collage, sculpture, and motion. Her work bears reference to those in low socioeconomic positions, with particular interest in the customs and beliefs, as well as the architecture, fashion, and informal economies present within this segment of society. A current theme explored in her work is the socio-cultural aspects of drug trafficking, and the branding and acceptance of the drug lord lifestyle. She is a recent graduate of Art Center College of Design and currently resides in Los Angeles, California.
