The 2010 mid August summer musical offered by Neighborhood Church of Castro Valley, is a much loved community and family theater event celebrating its 26th anniversary this year. The Prince of Egypt is a Broadway-style musical featuring spectacular Egyptian-themed sets, makeup and costumes, along with a full choir and live orchestra with a cast of over a hundred actors, singers, dancers, and musicians.
The Prince of Egypt features an original script along with over a dozen songs used by permission from the beloved animated film The Prince of Egypt, a 1998 Dreamworks Studio release. The songs from The Prince of Egypt were written by composer and lyricist Stephen Schwartz, well known for writing the recent Broadway musical smash hit, "Wicked." In 1999, The Prince of Egypt was nominated for academy awards for best Original Music Score and won for Best Original Song for "When You Believe." The Prince of Egypt is directed and choreographed by Faith Blevins, with musical direction by Kevin Ledbetter and set design by Pat Brandon.
The story of Moses, so familiar to so many with its passionate and engaging story of an ordinary man who led his people out of slavery in Egypt to freedom in the Promised Land, is detailed in the book of Exodus in the Old Testament scriptures. The Prince of Egypt opens with Moses' people, the Hebrews, brutally enslaved by their masters, the Egyptians. When Moses is born, his mother, yearning for a better and safer life for her son, hatches a plan to set him afloat in a basket on the Nile River just as the Pharaoh's daughter goes down to the river for her morning bath. Her plan works, and Moses is adopted by the royal daughter and raised with privilege as part of the royal family.
But though he looks and acts Egyptian, Moses is still a Hebrew at heart. As a young man, his true identity unexpectedly rises to reclaim him when he comes face to face with the harsh reality of his people's enslavement. Next, he is commissioned by God himself to confront the Egyptian Pharaoh where miracles and wonders ensue, culminating in the infamous Egyptian plagues featuring frogs, snakes, and the Angel of Death, along with the Hebrews' race to freedom.
Then, Moses leads his people feet first into the ultimate miracle the awe-inspiring parting of the Red Sea. As The Prince of Egypt concludes, Moses' destiny is fulfilled in his meeting with the Almighty on Mount Sinai, where, awestruck, he receives the Ten Commandments from God himself. It's an unlikely story of one man who takes his courage in hand and leads an entire people to freedom, and, thousands of years later, the story of The Prince of Egypt still has the power to surprise, encourage, and inspire.
Songs featured in The Prince of Egypt include "Deliver Us," "When You Believe," "All I Ever Wanted," "Through Heaven's Eyes," and "Playing With the Big Boys Now."
MUSIC & ARTS AT NEIGHBORHOOD: This year is the 26th anniversary of Summer Musicals at Neighborhood Church, a much loved and anticipated summer family tradition going back to 1985. The music and arts legacy at Neighborhood Church stretches back to the 1930's in Oakland, California, where the church established a reputation as a center of cutting edge contemporary dramatic and musical performances. When Neighborhood Church moved to Castro Valley in 1969 to break ground on a new facility overlooking Interstate 580/Route 238, the auditorium was designed and constructed with stage production in mind and features a hydraulic orchestra pit, an extensive backstage, a seven story fly gallery (for backdrops), and state-of-the-art sound and lighting systems. The music and arts program at Neighborhood Church draws talented performers from around the area to participate in regular seasonal productions, highlighted by Broadway-style productions at Christmas and Easter.
