Solar Sailing: Pathway to the Stars
"Solar Sailing: Pathway to the Stars" will be held at New York City College of Technology (City Tech) on July 21, 2010. City Tech is hosting an International Solar Sailing Symposium from July 20-22 in Brooklyn, and will present an evening event for the public in cooperation with The Planetary Society.
Louis Friedman, Executive Director of The Planetary Society, will kick off a discussion of solar sailing today. The first presentation will be by special guest Junichiro Kawaguchi of Japan's JAXA Space Exploration Center, talking about their incredible solar sail mission, IKAROS. The deployment in space of IKAROS this year moved flight with light from the theoretical to reality. Friedman will give an overview on next year's launch of The Planetary Society's own solar sail mission, Lightsail-1.
Other speakers will include NASA's Les Johnson and the University of Strathclyde's Eur Ing (European Professional Engineers) Malcolm Macdonald.
