Doug Carn and his West Coast Organ Band
Doug Carn West Coast Organ Band featuring the Tenor Titans
Sunday, February 22, 2015 at Kuumbwa Jazz  (320-2 Cedar Street, Santa Cruz, CA 95060)
Featuring Doug Carn on Hammond B3 organ; Howard Wiley and Teodross Avery on tenor saxophones; and Deszon Claibourne on drums.  Doors open at 6:30 with one show at 7:00.

Four jazz virtuosos explore the unlimited possibilities of the Jazz Organ combo with two tenor saxophone voices!

In a career dating back to the 1960s, piano and organ master, Doug Carn, has released eight solo albums and played alongside such artists as Stanley Turrentine, Shirley Horn, Melvin Van Peebles, Earth, Wind & Fire and Nat Adderley as well as appearing more recently on albums by Cindy Blackman and Wallace Roney.  His early recordings on the Black Jazz label combined a 'looser feel with a political mood that emphasized peace, love and independence', according to the website jazzwax.com.  Born in New York City and raised in St. Augustine, Florida, Doug played organ in church and graduated as valedictorian of his high school class.  He studied oboe at Jacksonville State where he later taught for many years.  Downbeat Magazine praised his composing and arranging as well as his ensemble playing by declaring that the 'most attractive component of the group's music is Doug's deft orchestrations which give it a much larger sound that its instrumentation would suggest'.

Growing up in Hercules, California, Howard Wiley started playing piano at age three and gravitated to the saxophone at eleven.  His grandfather who played in Count Basie's Orchestra was an early mentor.
Howard has played with Marcus Shelby's Jazz Orchestra and is currently a member of Lavay Smith's Red Hot Skillet Lickers.  In the words of the San Francisco Chronicle, Howard is 'a tenor titan when he takes off on something, swinging like crazy, leaping all over the chart like it's a jungle gym; blowing hot, then cool; first strident then tip-toeing through a chorus'.  His most recent album, The Angola Project, was inspired by Gospel music and slave chants recorded at Angola Prison in the 1950s.

Teodross 'Teo' Avery grew up in both Oakland and Vacaville, California.  His parents exposed him to a wide range of music that included traditional African music, Soul, Rock and Jazz.  Jolted by the sound of John Coltrane's Giant Steps, Teo began playing the saxophone and eventually won a full scholarship, at age seventeen, to attend the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston.  As a musician, Teodross Avery stands as one who defines live music  best experienced front row and full throttle.  His commanding presence, on stage and off, reflects this musical ingenuity and skills.  Teo holds a Masters degree in Music from the Steinhardt School of Education at New York University and is currently completing his doctorate degree at UC Berkeley.

Deszon Claibourne is a first-call drummer who flawlessly integrates the styles of straight-ahead jazz, funk, hip-hop and world music.  His skills have been finely honed through his studies with master drummers: Billy Cobham, James Levi, Barry Jekowsky, Kenneth Nash and Ralph Humphrey.  His performing and recording experience has included engagements with Peter Apfelbaum, Houston Person, Angela Bofil, Les McCann, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Rhoda Scott, Omar Sosa, Robben Ford, Boz Scaggs, Greg Howe, Ernie Watts, Doug Carn and Tom Scott.
