The Mutual Film Company gave Charlie Chaplin his first true opportunity to work with artistic freedom, and the result was a series of brilliant and hilarious masterpieces. In The Fireman, Chaplin playes a fireman who finds himself in a hot spot when he discovers that the Fire Chief earns extra money starting fires. In the magical One A.M., Chaplin performs solo as a drunken man who comes home, just wanting to go to sleep, and finds all of the objects in his house seem to be conspiring to keep him awake. In Behind the Screen, Chaplin is a stagehand in a movie studio who rebels against his oppressive Stage Manager, while romancing a fellow stagehand (Edna Perviance), who has disguised herself as a man to get the job. In The Floorwalker, Chaplin's first film for Mutual, he stars as a customer in a department store who finds out the manager is stealing money from the store. USA, 1916, 80 min., b/w
