Spirits of the Red City Seven Inch Vinyl Release Party
THE PROGRAM: Intro music by James Waldo (Spirits of the Red City cellist), the "two wheel tour" a short play produced by Open Eye Figure Theatre (http://www.openeyetheatre.org), Super 8 film collage set to music performed live by John Zuma Saint-Pelvin, Colleen Harris performing a movement piece set to music performed live by Paul Metzger(modified banjos. "a virtuoso and a visionary whose live performances are vital, deeply visceral and simply breathtaking." http://www.paulmetzger.net), Spirits of the Red City performance, including a live performance to the premiere of the "Mirror" music video, Exit music by James Waldo. The new 7" includes two songs, "Serves You Right" and "Young Girl's Heart". If you buy a physical copy of the record, you get a free download that includes a brand-new unreleased song called "Ghost of My Father". Like the debut record (and pretty much everything else they do), the artwork and packaging is all handmade. They recorded it live at The Old Blackberry Way Studio in Minneapolis (thank you, Neil) and mastered it at the Boiler Room in Chicago (thank you, Collin). ABOUT THE BAND: The City Pages recently honored us with Best Acoustic Performer, and we liked the words so much we're going to use some of them here instead of our usual ones: " A group of eight musicians swell and sway in unison, gathering around one another to listen for breaths and pauses, squeezing their eyes shut as they strum banjos and mandolins, bow cellos, and brush an old snare drum while singer Will Garrison amazingly, astonishingly sings out loudly enough for everyone in the room to hear  That the group has only played the Twin Cities four times in the past year and a half is a shame, but it's also a testament to their nomadic nature; Spirits of the Red City spend their time drifting from place to place, setting up in coffee shops and anarchist bookstores and street corners across the country and rippling their pensive, dynamic love lore out into the ether." Spirits is: Will Garrison (guitar, lyrics/vocals) Jason Overby (accordion, banjo, guitar) James Waldo (cello, viola da gamba) Ben Waldo (mandolin, viola) Alyssa Overby (singing) Rachel Overby (bass, singing) Brian Voerding (trumpet, pump organ) and Anthony Poretti (percussion).
