Las Soldaderas
Inspired by the texts of author Elena Poniatowska, the Grande Dame of Mexican Literature, Oswaldo Calderon's Las Soldaderas pays tribute to the women who were active participants in the Mexican Revolution. calderon explores the role played by these diverse women in a series of scenes depicting the lives of five fictional young women. According to Poniatowska, without these women, "there is no Mexican Revolution- they kept it alive and fertile, like the earth." Aguijon developed this play through a series of workshops exploring the quotidian aspects of war (the everyday, 'non-events' that don't make it into the history books) and the devastating effects of war on willing and non-willing participants. PERFORMED IN ENGLISH (Saturdays) AND SPANISH (Fridays & Sundays)
