"28 FEET": Piti Theatre Co. Brings Emotional, Comedic Twist to Living with Chronic Illness
Live, Laugh, Learn, Grow With This Inspiring Play; New York City Performances July 8 & 9
Do you suffer from diabetes or heart disease or inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) or another chronic illness? If not, you probably know someone who does.
28 FEET the creative, solo performance show from writer/performer Jonathan Mirin and the Piti Theatre Company provides all of us with the opportunity to be highly entertained while connecting with a community of those who journey often silently and painfully along the lonely, rocky path of illness and incapacity.
28 FEET comes to The Neighborhood Playhouse, 340 East 54th Street, New York on July 8 and 9 at 7:30 p.m.
Mirin, whose 20 years combating Crohn's Disease inspired this powerful play, offers the audience a comedic, autobiographical look at getting sick, getting better and growing up. From womb to adulthood, he takes us on a wild ride with original songs, puppetry, clowning, 18-plus characters and a high energy, physical performance style.
The title 28 FEET comes from the average length of the digestive tract which suffers from inflammation in Crohn's and other inflammatory bowel diseases. The show is directed and designed by Godeliève Richard, a Swiss native who shares Piti's Artistic Director title with Mirin. The husband-wife theatre duo welcomed their first child, Ezekiel, on October 25, 2009.
28 FEET premiered with a preview/workshop production in Boston last February where the audience provided valuable feedback to assist with the developmental process. Since then considerable press coverage and enthusiastic reviews have followed the show through performances in Boston, Shelburne Falls, Northampton, Framingham and Springfield, Massachusetts.
On June 23, Mirin takes the show to Atlanta at the request of UCB Pharmaceuticals which produces the Crohn's medication Cimzia to perform 28 FEET for the company's 250 employees, with the intent of giving them a stronger sense of the illness that their work seeks to relieve.
Mirin's first solo performance Riding the Wave.com was the subject of a front-page feature in the New York Times Business Section and nominated twice by the Independent Reviewers of New England (IRNE) for Best Solo Show. The company's Elmer & the Elder Tree, a dance-clown-theatre nature fable for family audiences, was called "an artful, arboreal fable which teaches children about naturewhile capturing their imaginations." (Beverly Creasey, Theatermirror.com)
Major sponsors for 28 FEET include Cramer Productions, Norwood, MA; McLean Hospital, Belmont, MA; Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Boston, MA; Mother Herb Diaper Service and Sacred Birth Midwifery, Northampton, MA.

28 FEET REVIEWS/PRESS
"Mirin's exuberant energy carried him through an hour-long production in which he played 18-plus characters, sang original songs with his guitar, and took moments to either paint or enact scenes through the use of puppetry." - Stephanie Santana, "28 FEET Unravels Writer's Struggle With Disease," Allston Brighton TAB; www.ptco.org/solo
"Mirin manages to make the story universal, not just his own . . . a warm and winning chronicle about self-knowledge, growth and the complex quest for health." - Jules Becker, "Confronting Crohn's and Himself" The Jewish Advocate
"Jonathan Mirin's account of the trip isn't depressing or gross or sentimental. It's leavened with jokes, music, whimsy, even romance . . ." - Chris Rohman, "Art Therapy with Guts" The Valley Advocate
