The Young Women's Chorus of San Francisco, under the direction of Artistic Director Dr. Susan McMane - recently awarded The American Prize in Choral Performance in the high school and youth division for 2014 - joins forces with the folksinger Moira Smiley and her trio VOCO for a concert celebrating the power of women's voices.
This concert will include music by and for women sung by women. YWC will be joined by the internationally recognized composer- vocalist Moira Smiley & VOCO. They are described as "combining the energy of urban street singing with first-rate musicianship, folk roots and traditions from throughout the world." (Folkworks Magazine ) Known for her excellence in traditional folk singing, Smiley also lights up the stage with body percussion and warm wit. Expect music that mourns, celebrates, and dances at the same time.
The Young Women's Chorus of San Francisco is quickly becoming recognized as a world-class choral organization for young women. Formed in 2012 under the artistic leadership of Dr. Susan McMane, the chorus has been praised for its beauty of sound, stellar musicianship, and dynamic programming. Recently, YWC was selected the winner of the prestigious American Prize in Choral Performance, 2014, in the high school and youth division. The young women, ages 11-18, come from across the Bay Area, and are provided exceptional musical experiences such as singing on the SF Opera stage with Jake Heggie and Frederica von Stade, and at Cal Performances with Kronos Quartet, as well as touring nationally to Boston and New York City and internationally to Italy.
YWCP's Artistic Director Susan McMane is a world-renowned choral conductor specializing in treble choral music. In 2012, she became the founding director of the Young Women's Choral Projects of San Francisco, where she conducts the auditioned chorus of young women from grades 7-12 and oversees a training choral program for younger girls. Dr. McMane has won many awards for her work including three GRAMMY Awards with the San Francisco Symphony and the 2007 "Symphony of Excellence Arts Award" from the Pacific Musical Society.
Moira Smiley & VOCO is a visionary blend of voices redefining harmony singing with the power & physicality of folksong, the avant-garde fearlessness of Béla Bartók and delicious, vaudevillian accompaniment of cello, banjo, ukelele, accordion and body percussion. Moira Smiley's award-winning original music and spell-binding American and East European folksong light up the stage with rompin' stompin' body percussion and warm wit.
