Alhan and Okbari Middle Eastern Ensembles
Okbari and Alhan Middle Eastern Music Ensembles come together to present an all star line up of traditional and contemporary Arabic music. They will perform compositions by the great Egyptian composers Mohammad 'Abd al Wahab and Sayyid Darwish, songs and melodies by Lebanese composers Philimone Wehbe and Ziad Rahbani and many traditional muwashshahat and popular songs. Okbari members are Amos Libby (oud, vocals), Eric LaPerna (percussion), and Duncan Ross Hardy (qanun). The members of Alhan are Madeleine Hanna; lead vocals, darbuka duff, Lauren Hastings; violin, Tom Kovacevic; oud, nay and vocals, and Eric LaPerna; riqq, darbuka and nay.
Alhan Middle Eastern Music Ensemble performs classical and popular Arabic and Turkish music of the 17th to the 21st centuries. The members of the ensemble bring many varied musical backgrounds to their exciting interpretation of Middle Eastern Music and have studied with leading performers from Palestine, Lebanon, Syria and Egypt. They offer a truly rare opportunity to experience some of the rich and beautiful traditions of the Middle East. The group features Madeleine Hanna; lead vocals and duff, Lauren Hastings; violin, Tom Kovacevic; oud, nay and vocals, and Eric LaPerna; riqq, darbuka and nay.
The Okbari Middle Eastern Ensemble presents music from the richly varied contemporary and historic cultural traditions of the Middle East including Arabic classical and folk music, Ottoman Turkish Classical compositions, rural Turkish folk and devotional songs, and dance music from the Armenian and Turkish immigrant Diasporas. The Ensemble has performed at numerous colleges, universities and performing arts venues throughout New England, the East Coast and the Midwest, including prestigious institutions such as the Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago, Alwan for the Arts in New York City and enjoyed the honor of being invited to perform at the 2009 Chicago Arabesque Festival. The Ensemble has shared the stage in Istanbul, Turkey with the Kemani Serkan Ensemble and the Rumeli Meyhane Fasil Ensemble.
