Sex-Positive Sex Work
Sex-Positive Sex Work: In a culture that's so divided about sex work of any kind (It's fascinating and kind of glamorous! It's debased and degraded!), sex workers have the most real knowledge about our own lives. But many of us carry some of society's obsessions to work with us. We often get self-esteem by comparing ourselves to other sex workers (I'm a dancer, not a whore! Well, at least I don't fuck them! Those street girls are all druggies!) -- and it can be hard to stay sex-positive when sex is, well, work. Join Carol Queen, author of Real Live Nude Girl: Chronicles of Sex-Positive Culture, to explore what makes a sex-positive sex worker -- and why you really want to be one if you're going to be a sex worker at all. This session is appropriate for people of all genders who've worked or are thinking about working.
Bio: Carol Queen has a PhD in sexology, which she financed largely through sex work. It was almost like a lab course! She's done explicit movies, worked at the Lusty Lady before some of you people were even born, and been a call girl. She is the founding director of the Center for Sex & Culture (www.sexandculture.org), has authored (or edited) many books about sex (most recently the updated second edition of Exhibitionism for the Shy), and works as Staff Sexologist at Good Vibrations. She's at www.carolqueen.com.
