Foodie-to-Farm September Farm Tour: Niagara Escarpment
THIS EVENT IS SOLD OUT!!
Foodie-to-Farm tour focuses on one of our most exciting agricultural regions the Niagara Escarpment. Guests will be picked up at our designated North Buffalo location (see below) and will head directly to Flavor Farm in Lockport, a farm utilizing sustainable methods to grow a fantastic variety of peppers, prized micro-greens and a curious number of heirloom tomatoes. From there, it is just a short trip to T-Meadow Farm, where farmer Rich Tilyou is raising rare heritage breed hogs on pasture. Here we will discuss the value of such breeds, the benefits of raising animals on pasture, and the finishing process. Ironically enough, the best thing you can do to encourage the continued growth of these endangered animals is to eat them! Tilyou is responsible for single-handedly repopulating the United States with endangered Glouchestershire Old Spots. Many of his hogs are sold to New York City's top chefs, in addition to making their way onto the menus of many of the best restaurants in WNY.
From here, we will board the bus and head east to Orleans County. Our destination will be the rolling vineyards of Leonard Oakes Estate Winery. Once we have arrived, we will enjoy a fabulous chef-prepared lunch featuring local ingredients while dining at tables situated between the rows of grapes. After our meal, the articulate and passionate Oakes family, Wendy, Jonathan and Jerod, will walk us through their vineyards, showing us their growing process and methods. The day will culminate in the tasting room, where we will sample award-winning wines and reflect on the pastoral beauty of the estate.
**Please include a valid email address where an itinerary and other information can be sent to you.** Itineraries will be distributed approximately one week before the tour date.
The bus will depart from the pick-up area on time. The pick-up area is the LaSalle Park and Ride Metro Station located on Main Street a few blocks south of University of Buffalo's South Campus.
Coolers and marked boxes will be available for guests who wish to purchase items at any of the farms we visit.
