2nd Annual Jazz Vespers Celebration at Downs United Methodist Church
Jazz Vespers is a representation of the centuries old tradition of evening worship in music. Written and directed by William (Bill) Bell the 2nd Annual Jazz Vespers presented by the United Methodist Men of Downs Memorial United Methodist Church will include an instrumental quintet along with vocalist Stanley Bull. Bell, has written a program that portrays the development of African American music from its beginnings in Africa through slavery to emancipation and beyond and includes all phases of Vespers Service,an opening prayer,an invocation and the passing of the peace. The Jazz Connection Quintet consists of Bill Bell on piano, Dezon Clayborn on drums, Charlie McCarthy on saxophone, James Tinsley on trumpet and Eric Vogler on bass. Bill Bell has performed on the national stage and is highly regarded in the Bay Area jazz scene. Bell, who is fondly called the Jazz Professor by his legions of students, is also well known as a religious and choral director. Jazz Vespers is a fundraising program for the United Methodist Men who sponsor a number of programs at Downs Memorial United Methodist Church and in the surrounding community.
