Meridian Music Presents: Alexandra Hay
Oakland-based composer and intermedia artist Alexandra Hay presents new intermedia work featuring three new pieces for projector and live electronics.
Hay's work often examines creative process and the intricate textures that emerge between words, objects and bodies. Born in New Zealand, she studied music composition at the New Zealand School of Music and musicology at the Freie Universität in Berlin, and is currently a Fulbright fellow and doctoral candidate in the Doctor of Musical Arts program at Stanford University.
Meridian Music at Canessa Gallery: The intimate acoustic experience that characterized Meridian Gallery's former performance space continues at Canessa Gallery, another historic building with a rich and storied past. The Canessa Building, built in the late 1800s, is an official San Francisco landmark. Once the home of numerous printing presses, the building was converted into art studio spaces in the 1920s by sculptor Ralph Stackpole and painter Timothy Wulff. For the next 35 years, artists, including Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, William Gerstle, Caroline Martin, and others, worked in what they called the "Ship Building," so-named because a ship's hull is incorporated into the structure of the building. Today, Canessa functions as a contemporary art gallery and is home to many creative professionals.
