Comedy Returns to El Rio! (Queer Comedy Night + Yayne)
Kung Pao Kosher Comedy Presents... Comedy Returns to El Rio takes place every 2nd Monday of the month @ 8pm at El Rio. In honor of Gay Pride Month, Monday, June 14th is a Queer Comedy Night.
Comedian/comedy producer, Lisa Geduldig, (Kung Pao Kosher Comedy) began her stand up comedy career 21 years ago at El Rio in San Francisco's Mission District. She strives to produce multicultural, multi-everything comedy shows with the variety of shows she produces each year (Kung Pao Kosher Comedy, Funny Girlz, The Color of Funny). The line-ups are always a diverse cultural, gender, and sexual orientation mix, and her comedy productions showcase some of the funniest and smartest stand up comics from San Francisco and beyond.
The Monday, June 14th show is a Gay Pride show and features: Karen Ripley, Lisa Geduldig, Nick Leonard, Ray Ferrer (had to cancel because of health), David Hawkins, and Yayne Abeba. KAREN RIPLEY, queer comic and improv master, has been featured on LOGO TV's "Wisecracks." Her comedy comes from her life experiences, from the "bluest lesbian jokes" to the most thought provoking political insights. Her laid back style will relax and then surprise with a one liner that will cause your head to fly back and your mouth will open. Intense sounds of laughter will rise up from your diaphragm and you will be loaded with endorphins. Effects have been known to last for days. And when you repeat Karen's jokes to your friends the effects start all over again. She began her comedy career in 1977 (33 years ago!) in the heyday of the GLBT comedy movement in San Francisco and now appears regularly at clubs, colleges, cruises, and festivals around the country.
LISA GEDULDIG is the creator, producer, & MC of a variety of annual comedy shows: Kung Pao Kosher Comedy; The George Bush Going Away Party; Funny Girlz; A Muslim, A Mormon, and A Jew Walk into A Bar; The Color of Funny; Comedy Returns to El Rio; Cafe con Comedy; Charo.
NICK LEONARD started performing stand up at the beloved Josie's Cabaret in The Castro and has appeared all over the U.S. His comedy graced the prestigious 2004 Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland. That same year, he was also voted one of San Francisco's top 10 comics by Karma.com. The former Cosmonaut and International Bon Vivant is the producer of the monthly gay comedy showcase, QComedy.
DAVID HAWKINS' manic style mixes pop culture fanaticism with punk rock cynicism into a style both nerdy and naughty. He has performed at the Yerba Buena Center, the National Queer Arts Festival, and co-hosted the SF LGBT Center's 7th Anniversary.
YAYNE ABEBA is a native San Franciscan of Ethiopian descent. She began studying acting at the Jean Shelton Actor's Lab in 1995 and was bitten by the comedy bug four years later at The Luggage Store. Realizing that there was no cure, she accepted her fate and has since been touted as one of San Francisco's up and coming comedians. Her style is fresh, innovative, cutting edge and just damn funny. She won The 2002 Russian River Comedy Competition and competed in several San Francisco International Comedy Competitions as well as the Seattle Comedy Competition.
