Before June 28, 1969, the NYPD had a free hand in bullying, beating, and arresting patrons of bars like the Stonewall that catered to members of the Gay, Lesbian and Transgender-Community. For the first time the Stonewall folks pushed back when being forcibly loaded on to paddy wagons. They set off a three-day rebellion that helped to launch the Gay Rights Movement. Speaking out in the film are Stonewall patrons, Village Voice reporters, and the cop who led the raid. This compelling documentary recalls the bad old days when homosexuality was equated with mental illness, and public service announcements warned about homosexuals who preyed on our youth A treasure-trove of archival footage gives life to this all-real-reality. At the height of the rebellion the cops raided Stonewall with tear gas, billy clubs, and a small army of tactical police. The rest is history. USA, 2010, 105 mins
