Molly Haskell's 1973 study From Reverence to Rape established her reputation as an insightful critic of women's roles in the U.S. A veteran film critic and author Molly Haskell will appear at the Cinema to discuss her richly endowed critical study of the renowned 1939 classic Hollywood film adapted from Margaret Mitchell's then best-selling historic novel about the fate of a plantation owner's family in the Civil War era. Haskell's historical overview takes on the ways in which Hollywood and cinema has stereotyped women, but also singles out those exceptions where women broke the stereotypical mold. Vivien Leigh's Oscar Best Actress Award as the tough willed Scarlet O'Hara broke the mold of the cinema's stereotypical passive, fainthearted suffering woman. She holds her own against Clark Gable's macho Frankly my dear, I don't give a damn. Haskell offers sharp insights into the male directors George Cukor, Victor Fleming and producer David O'Selznick, whose wrangling reflected racist America's stereotypical views of the folks imprisoned in the slavery system. Molly Haskell takes them all on in her scintillating examination of this 1930's novel and film: FRANKLY MY DEAR: "Gone With the Wind" Revisited. USA, 1939, 238min.
