Sarasota Jazz Festival Presents The Sarasota Jazz Project Big Band with Special Guests June Garber and John Lamb
Big Band Jazz Concert featuring bassist John Lamb and vocalist June Garber with The Sarasota Jazz Project. The Sarasota Jazz Project is dedicated to the preservation, promotion and performance of big band jazz music. The band was founded in February 2010 and is comprised of some of the best musicians in the area. At a Jazz Project performance, you will hear some of the classic music of the great big bands of the past, such as Ellington, Basie, Benny Goodman and Glen Miller and some vocal renditions of classics by Sinatra, Bennett, Nat Cole or Mel Torme. Audiences can expect to hear a blend of popular jazz standards and favorites from the Great American Song Book, presented in current new arrangements and styles, as well as modern compositions being heard for the first time.
John Lamb,a Jazz Club favorite,has performed at Jazz Club sponsored events for many years. John began playing the bass in 1951 and has shared the stage with all the top jazz artists. In 1964, he joined Duke Ellington's orchestra and toured for a number of years. He also performed with the Duke, as part of the Ellington jazz trio. He can be heard on most of the Duke's mid 60s recordings, including Grammy award winners.John has received numerous awards for his contributions to jazz, both as a performer and an educator. Among the awards he has received are the Lifetime Achievement Award for contributions as a member of the Ellington Orchestra and the coveted "Satchmo" award presented by the Jazz Club of Sarasota. He continues to perform on Florida's West Coast and the jazz performers in the area are honored to share the stage with him.
June Garber born in Johannesburg, South Africa. June moved to Canada in 1976, where she continued her career, which included theatre, singing, film and television! She has performed in theatre productions in most of the major theatres in Canada. She has toured & performed as a singer in venues across North America, including New York, Dallas, Florida, Atlanta, Las Vegas and Atlantic City. She has also performed in Cuba, South Africa and Australia. In 2006 she released her first album "SMILE". It was extremely well received and had extensive air-play on all of the major jazz stations. Her second CD "Here's to You" was one of the top five jazz picks on CBC and one of the most played jazz album on radio in Canada! June always manages to connect with her audience. When June sings, you feel as if she is singing directly to you.
