2015 San Juan Islands Agricultural Summit
The San Juan Islands Agricultural Summit is back in 2015! This year it's at the Lopez School on Lopez Island, Friday and Saturday, February 27 and 28. Join fellow farmers, regional experts, local food and farm advocates for two days of education, inspiration, and comaraderie. Keynotes by internationally renowned speakers Gary Nabhan, Thor Hanson, and Steve Jones will inspire and inform on the benefits of maintaining local heritage and place based food systems, the intricate evolution and triumph of seeds, and more. Attend one of the hands-on workshops on Friday, February 27th. Back by popular demand: humane, on-farm slaughter with Farmstead Meatsmith; and biochar production and kiln demos. New this year: baking with local grains with Jonathan Bethony McDowell, resident baker at the Washington State University Research and Extension Center Bread Lab in Mt. Vernon; writing your own farm plan.
On Saturday February 28 choose from 24 compelling sessions led by regional experts: farmland changing hands, funding for farmers, creating an organic seed business, building soil fertility, growing nutrient-dense vegetables, rules and regulations for value-added production, pollinator health, local grain production and end-uses, malting, tips on marketing, and more.
IMPORTANT: Please Register for both Friday the 27th AND Saturday the 28th. After you have selected your workshop for Friday, select the box on the left that lists the date. A drop down menu will appear allowing you to choose February 28th.
