Ian Johnson: Roots of Radical Islam in the West
As the world learned that the 9/11 hijackers had lived in Europe, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Ian Johnson wondered how such a radical group could sink roots into Western soil. A Mosque in Munich (also the title of the resulting book) was the home for a group of ex-Soviet Muslims engaged by the Nazis, and then the post war CIA, as an anti-Soviet propaganda machine. When the same group falls under the influence of the Muslim Brotherhood, it assumes a key role in setting a radical agenda for Islam in Europe, and is eventually associated with terrorist attacks in the Westincluding the World Trade Center. A fascinating look at Cold War spying and of the West's disastrous first encounter with radical Islam, Johnson's work is crucial to our understanding the mistakes we are still making in our relationship with Islamists today.
