XPN Welcomes Joseph Arthur
"When I first heard Jo's music, his lyrics jumped out at me. I love his words, love his music. It's great to see some of his best written work assembled. His words rattle and rumble and prise open the cage". Peter Gabriel. Arden is pleased to welcome singer songwriter Joseph Arthur who will perform solo on stage as well as creating paintings on stage and sharing his artwork with the town of Arden in an afternoon event. Cliff Hillis Band will open the show.
We are thrilled to have critically acclaimed songwriter Joseph Arthur on the stage in Arden for the first time for an XPN Welcomes show. After getting rave reviews for his collection of Lou Reed songs, "Lou", and coming off a huge tour with the Afghan Whigs, Arthur had a notable 2014. Expect to hear many of Arthur's own hits, including the outstanding In The Sun, Honey and the Moon and I Miss The Zoo, as well as tracks from his concept album, The Ballad of Boogie Christ.
Also an renowned poet and visual artist, Arthur is known to complete entire paintings while performing on stage. He has worked with Peter Gabriel and Ben Harper, and had his song In The Sun covered by Michael Stipe and Coldplay a few years ago. Arthur is a unique breed of pure artist, and a perfect fit for the Gild Hall.
Arthur will also give a workshop and gallery earlier in the day, with details available here shortly. More info on Joseph Arthur can be found at his web site josepharthur.com as well as his online gallery, The Museum of Modern Arthur at museumofmodernarthur.com.
Cliff Hillis Band
Over the course of his career, Hillis has earned a solid reputation as a highly sought-after multi instrumentalist, singer/songwriter, session and touring musician, and studio whiz. In addition to contributing guitar, bass and keyboards, he has also helmed numerous recording, production and mixing projects for a varied stable of artists. Hillis can also be seen performing with several popular Philadelphia-area bands and artists including Eric Bazilian, Jeffrey Gaines, and the In the Pocket: Essential Songs of Philadelphia project.
The "Song Machine" EP takes its name from the Song Machine email group, which was recently profiled in The New York Times. Founded in 2001 by Austin-based hit singer/songwriter Bob Schneider, participants in the group play a songwriting game which challenges its members of which Cliff Hillis is one -- to write an original song featuring a specific lyric, within a weekly deadline. Over the years a number of high-profile artists, including Jason Mraz, Patty Griffin and Matt Nathanson, have participated in the Song Machine group. Two of the tracks on "Song Machine," "Hang On To The Moment" and "Goodnight Sunlight," owe their existence to Hillis' participation in that group.
"Song Machine" also features contributions from special guest musicians and co-writers, including: Scot Sax (Wanderlust, Faith Hill co-writer), troubadour Dan Bern, Phil Solem (The Rembrandts), Patrick Berkery (Pernice Brothers, Wesley Stace, Daniellson), and John Lilley (The Hooters). - See more at: http://cliffhillis.com/bio/#sthash.zLzuACbM.dpuf
