Gas House Gorillas and West Philadelphia Orchestra
We are having a dance party at Gild Hall with 2 high energy bands from the region! Gas House Gorillas, who opened for the Blasters last year, will co-headline with the Balkan big band powerhouse West Philly.
The Gas House Gorillas often bring the show into the audience spurring fans to sing, dance and get wild. Cutting up with each other and the crowd, the Gorillas are more than a great band, they are great entertainers as well. The band describes their sound as Punk Americana which encompasses a broad range of styles that include Jump Blues, Rock & Roll, Roots Rock, Swing, Cajun Music with Punk Rock energy. Artists as diverse as Wynonie Harris, Groucho Marx, Sam Cooke, Fats Waller, and The Ramones all coexist in the Gorillas musical and on stage vernacular.
With a diverse line-up of professional Philadelphia musicians whose influences range from Sun Ra to Bulgarian brass bands, West Philadelphia Orchestra is a unique live ensemble in today's auto-tuned musical world. They began playing Romanian ballads, Macedonian folk-dance songs, Bulgarian wedding music, and Klezmer in late 2006, and have continued expanding their repertoire of Eastern European music. The band also plays original tunes which blend other sounds, like jazz and classical, together with traditional Balkan sounds. As much a community as a band, WPO's performances are celebratory events. With blistering beats and walls of brass, they inspire audiences to hold hands, dance, and slip the yoke of the homogenized culture industry.
