Workshop 3B: LGBTQ Youth Competency
This free workshop is sponsored by the Seattle/King County Gang Prevention & Outreach Work Group.
Description:
This high-energy workshop integrates multi-media components, opportunity for self-reflection, interactive activities, and concrete skill-building. In a safe and creative space, participants will learn more about sexual and gender diversity, gain valuable skills in working with LGBTQ youth today, and have questions answered. This workshop will also provide the "next step" and focuses on assessing LGBTQ competency within human service organizations and educational environments. Participants will create customized plans for evaluating and improving their policies, practices, and organizational culture.
About the Instructor(s):
Sid J. Peterson is a certified attorney, trainer, and educator with over a decade of experience strengthening communities for young people in the Pacific Northwest. Drawing on a background in program management/direction and evaluation in youth-serving agencies, Sid works in partnership with community organizations to build internal capacities.
As a trainer, Sid addresses the rapidly changing social views of gender and sexuality and employs arts and technology to reshape the way we do professional development. Most recently, Sid co-produced/directed PUT THIS ON THE {MAP}, a documentary video featuring 26 youth re-teaching gender and sexuality in King County. Applying pro-feminist and anti-racist core personal and professional values, Sid is dedicated to practicing these commitments within participatory structured workshops.
Megan M. Kennedy, MA, LMHC, is an individual and group mental health counselor and a graduate of the Leadership Institute of Seattle. As a Sexual Minority Mental Health Specialist for a network of mental health agencies in Washington State, Kennedy is a regional expert and consultant on youth gender and sexual identity issues. In her role directing outreach programs at Youth Eastside Services, Kennedy leads innovative strategies in violence prevention and community-based counseling in communities across East King County.
Integrating creative arts/media and community-organizing into her work, she co-produced/directed PUT THIS ON THE {MAP}, a documentary video featuring 26 youth re-teaching gender and sexuality in King County. Kennedy's commitment to health and wellness and anti-racism/oppression create the intersection of all the professional endeavors that she is involved in today.
