Workshop 3A: Disproportionate Minority Contact (DMC) within the Juvenile Justice System: How to Recognize it and What to do About It.
Description:
This workshop is designed to identify the key decision points in the juvenile justice system that are used to identify areas where minority youth are disproportionately represented and how that disproportionality can be reduced including direct service best practices information.
Participants will:
(1) Be able to identify the key decision making points in the juvenile justice system that can identify disproportionality; (2) Learn how to systematically examine and reduce DMC; (3) Understand the Relative Rate Index (RRI) forms used to identify possible areas of disproportionality; (4) Learn about the various mechanisms that lead to DMC; and (5) Learn about DMC reduction strategies and direct service best practices.
About the Instructor:
Ms. Lisa Wolph has worked for the Governor's Juvenile Justice Advisory Committee (GJJAC) for 19 years. The last three years she has held the position of Disproportionate Minority Contact (DMC) Coordinator. In this position Ms. Wolph works with communities to assist in looking at the various decisions stages in the juvenile justice system and the representation of minority youth at each stage. Ms. Wolph and the GJJAC offer technical assistance to help communities reduce any identified disproportionate representation. Ms. Wolph holds a Bachelors degree in Public Policy from Washington State University.
