The Return of Dr. Schaffer and Mr. Stern, with Special Guest Saki - One Night Only Fundraiser
The Return of Dr. Schaffer and Mr. Stern, with Special Guest Saki One Night Only Fundraiser Sponsored by and at West End Studio Theatre, Santa Cruz, Saturday, June 12, 8:00 PM 402 Ingalls St. Suite 3, Santa Cruz
Since its founding over twenty years ago in Santa Cruz, the Dr. Schaffer and Mr. Stern Dance Ensemble has charmed audiences throughout North America with highly physical, thought-provoking, humorous shows. After a break from performing their collaborative works in Santa Cruz to focus on their work as Teaching Artists with the Kennedy Center, and to pursue individual projects, Karl Schaffer and Erik Stern will be sharing many of their beloved dances for one night only.
Co-artistic directors Karl Schaffer and Erik Stern burst on the scene with "4-Footed Hamlet," a spoken and danced reverent parody of Shakespeare's classic. Their innovative shows revealing the surprising and entertaining connections between mathematics and dance have led to their being sought after educators as well as performers. Saki is a well known and admired Santa Cruz dancer and teacher who has worked with Schaffer and Stern for ten years.
Later this summer, Schaffer, Stern, and Saki will perform and teach their interdisciplinary math-dance work in Europe for the first time. The Return of Dr. Schaffer and Mr. Stern is a benefit concert to raise funds for their travel expenses. The trio will be dancing at Bridges 2010--a well-established conference exploring the wonderful connections between mathematics and art, in Pécs, Hungary in late July--and Constructionism 2010, an educational conference devoted to hands-on activities taking place in mid-August in Paris.
From a dance about the human compulsion to make language out of everything, to the exquisitely beautiful "Shadowed Flight," from "Rotation," a trio for two men and a basketball, to surprising ways to manipulate a simple sheet of paper, don't miss the company's signature works, presented in concert at West End Studio Theatre on Saturday June 12 at 8 pm. The concert will also feature Schaffer and Stern's signature audience interactions.
(more) Schaffer is a dancer and choreographer who also teaches mathematics at De Anza College; Stern teaches Dance at Weber State University in Utah, and choreographs extensively. Their performances and education work were covered in the March 2010 issue of Dance Teacher Magazine.
Join in the fun, and help them on their tour. This concert is generously sponsored by West End Studio Theatre. Tickets are $17.50 in advance, $20 at the door, but larger donations will be gratefully accepted.

Dances on the program: Shadowed Flight- Employing simple white poles as props, Shadowed Flight is a meditative progression of images and surprising shapes, with score by Samuel Barber. The Flying Machine- The history of science often focuses on innovations from the West, but in this dance Chinese legends of flight, and the giant tangrams used to tell them, are examples of how misguided this approach and science itself can be. Stationery- Set to score by Jack Spence, three dancers keep a piece of stationary . . . well, stationery. Lost Soles- Fitting seven-count tap dance phrases into eight-count music, the dancers explore how the differences between these two numbersculturally, metaphorically and historicallyis perplexing and funny. Music is by Rick Walker. Faux Paws- One of the company's low-tech films, with surprising and complex hand choreography. Handshake- A vaudevillian routine about two gentleman who can't seem to connect. Rotation- A trio for two dancers and a basketball.
