Science: Spencer Wells: The Cost of Civilization
We live in an era of unprecedented material wealth and scientific advantage, so why are we still mired in disease, stress, depression, and societal chaos? Population geneticist Spencer Wells, a National Geographic Explorer in Residence, blames our shift 10,000 years ago from hunter-gatherers to farmers. Wells, author of Pandora's Seed, said the decision to control our own food supply propelled us into the modern world, yet carries costs we're only now beginning to recognize. Presented as part of Seattle Science Lectures, with Pacific Science Center and University Book Store. Series sponsored by Microsoft.
