Fringe Dance Showcase
This Fringe Dance Showcase features several pieces by local and imported dancers (not necessarily in this order)
:
Push-Pull  by Aparna Keshaviah
In this series of Bharatanatyam (classical south Indian dance) pieces, a lone dancer journeys between highs and lows of pleasure and pain, desire and rejection, triumph and struggle.  Her journey is acoustically amplified by the music, comprised of a string quartet, a Sanskrit lullaby, Carnatic solfège, mridangam drumming, and playful sequences of footwork - where sharp slaps of the feet, echoed by jingling ankle bells, provide a rhythmic counterpoint.

Aparna Keshaviah (keshaviah.com) is a statistician and Bharatanatyam dancer.  She has presented her modernization of this south Indian classical dance around the U.S., India, and Italy, and was awarded a Fulbright grant for research into traditions within the form.  She resides in WNC, where she consults on medical/public health research.

Rebellion on all fronts - Brittany Lopez
Rebellion on all fronts is an improvisational work that delves into the ideas of instant performance, spontaneous composition, and impulsive decision-making. Believing that improvisational performance can be just as complex as choreographed pieces, this process aims to investigate improvisation as both the means of creation and the method of performance.  This solo is one-of-a-kind each time it is performed. This solo is the culmination of space, place, sensation, and movement

Being Bad Feminists: Tales of Surviving the Patriarchy - Christine Garvin and Michelle Grasty
Five stories via spoken word, multimedia, dance. 1. "True" feminist: Are high heels only for men, or can a woman love them for herself? 2. Immigrant child: Family expectations vs. self-identification as a queer, independent female. 3. Motherhood: Chastising and celebrating the world's most difficult job. 4. Fairytale Princess: Being beautiful in a society that both reveres - and hates - you. 5. Healing: Celebrating our differences while rallying to achieve equality.

Turning Point- Sarah Barnard/ Wingspan Dance
Wingspan Dance is investigating a connection to make local dance and local food an important development to people and something to be supported. We are sourcing local flour and bread, local curiosity and dance to create a piece that peaks a persons' taste in quality.

Tide    Hunting Island Collective
Tide is a new piece growing out of a site-specific collaboration that began in October. One outcome of this collaboration has been a video, Lucid Water, completed by three New Media artists independent of dancer input. Tide, our current work, revisits the footage collected in situ, combining butoh-based choreography that partners with this exquisite, yet-to be-seen footage.     The piece is based on the explorations of organic ebb and flow--revealing and concealing, inhabiting and vacating.

Middle Easetern Power Cord      Giles Collard
Belly Dance with building a sculpture with power tools. Giles Collard is one of the founding directors of theAsheville Fringe Arts Festival and isthe Co-Director of Asheville Contemporary Dance Theatre. Hiswork is notoriously some of the fringiest in the festival.
