The Drinking & Writing Festival
Drinking & Writing will hold The Sixth Annual Drinking & Writing Festival on June 12.
This year the focus is on Chicago's own, Mike Royko. Royko won the Pulitzer Prize in 1972 and wrote over 7500 columns for the Chicago Daily News, Chicago Sun-Times, and Chicago Tribune. He is author of the best-selling Boss: Richard J. Daley of Chicago. Royko was a great supporter of 16" softball and he was inducted into the 16" Softball Hall of Fame in 2001.
The festival is a day of great craft beer and talks and events celebrating the great Chicago journalist and man of the people Mike Royko. So far the lineup for discussions includes Northwestern University's Bill Savage; Pete Crowley, Brewmaster from Haymarket Pub & Brewery and Radio Brewmaster for The Drinking and Writing Brewery Radio Show; Denese Neu, PhD, Urban Social Scientist; and Drinking & Writing's Sean Benjamin and Steve Mosqueda.
Also on hand to discuss Chicago's historic bars will be Sean Parnell, the recipient of this year's Drinking and Writing Award for Outstanding Achievement in Drinking and Writing. Sean Parnell is the creator of the Chicago Bar Project and author of Historic Bars of Chicago (Lake Claremont Press, May 2010). The award goes to a drinker/writer who exemplifies the best of both drinking and writing. Previous recipients include Chicago Tribune's Rick Kogan and Bill Jauss, Modern Drunkard author and editor Frank Kelly Rich, and beer writer Ray Daniels.
We will have beer from some great microbreweries and brewpubs including Rock Bottom, Goose Island, Metropolitan Brewing, Half Acre and others. Of course, there will be the ever popular Two Drink Minimum Writing Contest. For this contest, everyone who has been using their drink tickets properly is given paper, pen, theme, and two minutes to write a story related to that theme. All legible and illegible entries will be judged immediately and the winner will receive a fabulous prize (previous prizes include a tour and tasting for 10 at Goose Island Beer Company and your weight in beer from Goose Island). Lake Claremont Press will have books for
Admission is $20.00 for tickets purchased in advance (www.drinkingandwriting.com) or $25.00 at the door.
