Voices From the Heart Concert - We're Gonna Have a Time!
Join Voices From the Heart, a 200-voice women's chorus, for their Spring Concert! The women of "Voices from the Heart!" will sing "We're Gonna Have a Time!" on May 22 at South Church in Portsmouth. The singing, clapping, drumming, Gospel/Jazz piano and bass will make the rafters ring at this "Voices" spring concert at 4:00 and 7:30.
"We'll kick off our concert dancing into the hall singing 'Dance for the Nations' followed by music from Nigeria, Angola, South Africa and American songs from the Jewish, Shape-Note, Gospel, Spiritual and Jazz genres," says director, Joanne Connolly. "I'm very excited to have Matt Jenson back with us for this concert! Matt played with us before he moved to Boston to play and to teach at Berklee College of Music. I've sung and conducted with Matt, and he's just the best! He infuses everything he does with great musicianship and tremendous fun! The last time I performed with him at the Press Room he had everyone on their feet. He's just fabulous! We'll be doing a great old jazz standard, 'Operator' together and have an amazing soloist, Kate Clark, on board. And I can't wait to rock the house with a very very upbeat rendition of the Gospel tune 'All God's Children' with Matt on keyboard, and his bandmates Alex Alvear and Pablo Bencid on bass and drums. The concert will be very dynamic and really fun!"
"Voices' "very own African drumming group, "Drumamma," will ramp up the world beat on the African tunes! Cheryl Booth, Susan Downing, Jeanne Russell, Nancy Hotchkiss and Gail Berneike will welcome singers and audience alike with an exciting ingathering drumming piece after our Nigerian "Efuo," a song to call the ancestors into the space. Angola's "Aluta Continua!".(We Will Continue Until We Win!) sets the upbeat and fun tone that everyone will feel from the outset of the concert."We're Gonna Have a Time!"
