Dancing on the Edge of the World, A People's History of the United States Through Dance
Grrrl Brigade, Dance Brigade's youth company will present their spring concert Dancing on the Edge of the World, A People's History of the United States through Dance. This full-length dance-drama, performed by 80 girls ages 9 to 18 who train at Dance Mission, explores different native and immigrant cultures that create the fabric of American life and the struggles they face. The piece created by the teaching staff of the Grrrl Brigade program, features a sign language piece based on the Trail of Tears, modern dances depicting the experiences of the Japanese internment, contemporary struggles of Latin America, and early immigrant and workers rights from Russia and China. Other works portray the emancipation of slaves and women's rights through hip-hop, belly dance, and theater with Poetry by Joy Harro, music by Mercedes Sosa, Michael Jackson, and Rhiannon. And finally, no Grrrl Brigade show would be complete without the power of Taiko drums. Come join these energetic girls in this spectacular Bay Area cultural extravaganza. A show not to be missed!
