Merrimans' Playhouse Jazz Performance Series presents Paul Bedal Group
CONCERT CANCELLED DUE TO FAMILY EMERGENCY AND MERRIMANS' PLAYHOUSE WILL BE CLOSED FOR THE WEEKEND. Sorry for the inconvenience. We will reschedule this group for a future date.
The Paul Bedal Group featuring Caroline Davis, Charlie Kirchen and Christian Euman will perform his compositions highlighting the rhythmic and melodic aspects of his compositions with cohesive interplay. Paul Bedal is a pianist and composer who has been a contributing member in the Chicago music scene the last 5 years. In October, Paul released his debut album "Chatter" on Ears and Eyes Records. LA based pianist Vardan Ovsepian writes, "very interesting and fresh both harmonically and rhythmically!" Paul is a graduate of the University of Miami Frost School of Music, and recently earned his MFA in film scoring at Columbia College Chicago. Paul is also a member of the Italian outfit "El Portal", appearing on two releases on Rome based CAM Jazz records. Paul has shared the stage with artists such as Jim Black, Lee Konitz, Maria Schneider and Dennis Carroll.
Mobile since her birth in Singapore, Caroline Davis is a saxophonist and vocalist living in Brooklyn, New York. She has enjoyed performances with Matt Wilson, Bobby Broom, Dennis Carroll, Tom Garling, Erin McKeown, and Allison Miller. Her quartet album, Live Work & Play, was featured on All About Jazz's best releases of 2012, and she was named one of several Best New Artists in Jazztimes 2012 Critics' Poll. She also finds her voice well suited for other outfits including Whirlpool, Pedway, Fatbook, and Orso, as well as New York-based Cotyledons and Caili O'Doherty Quintet.
Since graduating from college in 2010, Charlie Kirchen has played lots of bass in many different musical contexts around Chicago. He is fascinated by the point at which logic crumbles in the face of the unknown, and has made it his lifelong goal to reach that point in his music making.
Christian Euman was born in Blue Island, Illinois, and began playing drums at age 3. He attended Western Michigan University as a Billy Hart Jazz Scholar and received a bachelor's degree in jazz studies. Euman has served as an instructor at the Keith Hall Summer Drum Intensive since 2009. He was awarded second place in the 2010 Percussive Arts Society International Drumset Competition. Euman has performed with Donny McCaslin, Kris Bowers, Kurt Elling, John Clayton, Robert Glasper and Ed Simon. In 2012, he was the drummer for the hit musical "Crowns" at Chicago's Goodman Theatre, and he has appeared at the 2012 and 2013 Next Generation Jazz Festival.
