THE PONYS/DISAPPEARS/WOVEN BONES
THE PONYS- Maybe you just thought The Ponys were returning to the club circuit to rehash old glories and use some old drink tickets. If so, you were WRONG, WRONG, WRONG. Coming on April 20 (digital) and May 25 (12 vinyl) is the first new Ponys' release since 2007's 'Turn The Lights Out', the menacingly awesome 'Deathbed + 4 EP
DISAPPEARS- Disappears is made up of some Chicago scene veterans-- Brian Case of garage-rock favorites the Ponys as well as several members of the defunct post-rock band Boas. Disappears' sound is a pared-down, drone-heavy mixture of Velvet Underground scuzz, garage-rock energy, and krautrock propulsion. It may not feel like the most unique approach, but, importantly, the band seems aware of that. Part of Disappears' appeal is that they've chosen to work within a set of stylistic and sonic limitations, where vocals and instrumentation are stripped back to their most essential. It's more about minimalism and mastering the basics than making something brand-new.
WOVEN BONES- Vibe's a tough thing to nail; some got it, some surely don't. It doesn't stop a whole mess of bands from aiming to nail down the same vibes, among them the garage-throb in the Velvets/Spacemen 3 vein. Woven Bones work in that sound, as do fellow Austinites the Black Angels; mainstays like Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and the Warlocks have long made the stuff their stock-and-trade. But on their debut LP, In and Out and Back Again, the airtight, breathless Woven Bones set themselves apart from every one of those bands by, well, somehow coming closer to the intangible qualities these groups valued from Spacemen, et al. in the first place.
