Rhonda Benin - Soul drenched Jazz with a touch of the blues
A member of the Cultural Heritage Choir and a veteran of more than 100 recordings, theatre and dance productions and collaborations with artists as diverse as Maria Muldaur and Kenny G, Ronda Benin has earned her reputation as a versatile performer and a vocalist blessed with a voice like sultry caramel.
Benin will be backed by the trio of pianist John Burr, bassist Ron Belcher and drum master Babatunde Lea.
Her voice has been described as sultry, honey-sweetened caramel. It's no surprise that vocalist Rhonda Benin is enjoying a very full and versatile musical career. She started out as a member of the Los Angeles based jazz trio "Sound of Soul" which won the prestigious Hollywood Bowl's Battle of the Bands. Rhonda went on to be featured as a background vocalist in over 100 recordings. She has performed with Ronnie Laws, Hubert Laws, Michael Bolton, Kenny G, Jeffrey Osborne, Paul Jackson Jr., Brian and Edward Holland.
In 1989 after working with singer Maria Muldaur, Rhonda moved to the Bay Area, where she branched into theatre with ACT's production of GOSPEL AT COLONUS, and The Oakland Ensemble Theatre's, MLK, WE ARE THE DREAM. She also collaborated with Hugh Masekela on Dimensions Dance Theatre's production of PEOPLE OF THE ZOZO'S.
Rhonda is a member of Linda Tillery and the Cultural Heritage Choir (CHC), a nationally acclaimed a capella group, performing traditional African American Music. The group regularly tours Europe and Canada and has performed in over 13 countries. In 1997 CHC was nominated for a GRAMMY for their children's CD, Shakin A Tail Feather, with bluesmen, Taj Mahal and Eric Bibb. In 2001, the group released the California Music Awards nominated Say Yo Business, featuring Wilson Pickett, Richie Havens and Odetta. Rhonda also appears on the group's recordings, Good Time, A Good Time, Hippity Hop and Front Porch Music.
