UNCLE SAM'S CHILDREN IN AFRICA by Sia Amma
The Marsh is proud to announce Sia Amma's UNCLE SAM'S CHILDREN IN AFRICA as part of its Festival of New Voices.
The two-week Festival is the culmination of The Marsh Performance Initiative, a nine-month model for performance development taking into account both the artistic development and the business aspects of developing new theater.
There will be six, new full-length solo works, all from up-and-coming performers, and 11 shorter works. Also, two established Marsh performers, Don Reed and Ann Randolph, have been invited to use the Festival as an impetus to start new work.
Each full-length piece will have four performances at the Festival. The shorter works will be performed twice each, preceding the full-length works.
Sia Amma is out of Africa. She grew up in a small town between the boundaries of Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea in West Africa. She remembers walking through town as a child, seeing family members, beautiful buildings and children laughing in the streets. In the market, Mandinka women sold ceremonial white cloth. Twenty years later, when she returned following the civil war, that was all gone. The entire town had vanished. Amma is a stand-up comedian, dancer and actress who is best known for making fun of African and American cultures, relationships, life experiences, sexuality and, of course, herself.
Scheduled with the following shorter works:
DO THE MATH by Paul Sussman: Thursday June 3 & Sunday June 13
THE SLAUGHTERHOUSE TRAPEZE by Mia Paschal: Saturday June 5 & Friday June 11
