THE GREAT WHITE HOPE - In Person: JANE ALEXANDER
Members: $15 / Public: $20 Includes Screening, Q&A with Discussion and Reception
Join us for a special appearance by Jane Alexander, four-time Academy-Award nominated actress, and former Director of the National Endowment for the Arts, with a special archivalprint screening of her film debut, The Great White Hope, for which she earned an Academy Award Nomination. She had already won Tony for her performance in the original production on Broadway with James Earl Jones. Based on Howard Sackler's Broadway play about the life of boxing great Jack Johnson, The Great White Hope stars James Earl Jones as the first-ever African-American heavyweight champion who fights racism, hostile fans, and aggressive promoters to become the top fighter in the world in the early 1900s. However, he finds that he has provoked the anger of the government, labor unions, and the boxing racket itself because of his race, talent, and his romance with a white woman, Eleanor (Jane Alexander). Revealing and entertaining, The Great White Hope takes an unflinching look at racial politics in America. (USA, 1970, 103 min; Director: Martin Ritt) Ms. Alexander will be interviewed by Foster Hirsch, pioneer in the establishment of academic film criticism and author of innumerable books, including most recently, "The Dark Side of the Screen: Film Noir" and "Otto Preminger: The Man Who Would Be King."
