THE FIRE WITHIN St. Louis Premiere Peru, 2008 English/Spanish with English subtitles Documentary Director: Lorry Salcedo Mitrani 55 min. During the late 19th century rubber boom, Moroccan Jews came to the Amazonian rainforests of Peru, married indigenous women and kept names like Cohen, Pinto and Kahn. Many settled in the remote village of Iquitos. Original Jewish traditions blended with Amazonian life creating an authentic, but practically unknown form of Judaism. Many families have immigrated to Israel while others have stayed in Iquitos to be reconverted to more normative Judaism by well-intentioned rabbis.
