"The Peculiar Patriot" A reading and Meet & Greet with Liza Jessie Peterson and MAPP International
The Peculiar Patriot is a humorous and provocative play that confronts our country's profit-driven mass incarceration industry as she portrays people who cope and stay connected in spite of brick walls and iron gates. The work has its genesis in prisons, where Peterson served as a teaching artist, while also writing and sharing Patriot monologues in 35 jails and penitentiaries across the country. Answering the call to "tell our stories" Peterson conveys family milestones and neighborhood gossip as she delivers a punchy and shrewd indictment of the criminal justice system. Following the reading, audience members will have the opportunity to ask questions and learn more about the play.
