SCUBA: National Touring Network for Dance
Velocity Dance Center pleased to present the seventh annual edition of the SCUBA: National Touring Network for Dance featuring the dynamic pairing of Seattle's Amy O'Neal / locust and San Francisco's Jacinta Vlach / Liberation Dance Theater.
The SCUBA program was initiated by Velocity in 2002 as a way for regional dance centers to bring attention to the artists that emerge from their own vibrant dance communities, and to engage in exchange with other dance communities across the country. Velocity's national SCUBA partners are The Southern Theater in Minneapolis, Philadelphia Dance Projects, and ODC in San Francisco.
This SCUBA performance marks the first Velocity show in its newly renovated home at 1621 12th Avenue. Velocity's new venue is named the Founders Theater in honor of Velocity's founders, Michelle Miller and KT Niehoff. The Founders Theater is a dedicated theater for dance featuring three different theatrical "looks", intimate seating for 100 +, and a suite of technical equipment to support Velocity's contemporary dance performances.
The SCUBA Artists: Slyly integrating contemporary dance, funk, pop culture, video, and live music Seattle's Amy O'Neal / locust is one of this town's hottest tickets. locust will perform crushed, a gritty and intimate group work which explores themes of cause and effect, and was recently seen at PICA's TBA Festival in Portland, OR. locust is co-directed by performer/choreographer Amy O'Neal and musician/composer Zeke Keeble. Willamette Weekly says crushed is "infectious, energizing stuff; dance that sucks you in and makes you want to get off your ass and join in." www.locustsucka.com
Also working with a fusion of high art and street sensibilities, San Francisco's Jacinta Vlach / Liberation Dance Theater brings contemporary social issues to life through dance, theater, and language. Liberation Dance Theater will perform Animal Farm, an exploration of power and corruption based on George Orwell's 20th classic of the same name. Animal Farm premiered at ODC in San Francisco in April of 2009 and then toured to Jacob's Pillow. SF Weekly says, "Choreographer Jacinta Vlach dives head first into the ever thorny topics of race, culture and identity. . . and jettisons the neutral ground of conventional dance for more provocative terrain." www.jacintavlach.com
