Blacksburg: Pests, Disease and Natural Beekeeping
The looming threat of colony collapse disorder has raised awareness about the plight of the honey bee and increased demand for honey produced naturally, in a manner that supports the health of the honey bee population.
This one-day workshop will provide a series of lectures and hands-on demonstration sessions.
Lectures will include the following topics: Feedback on winter experiences; brief review of intro to natural beekeeping workshop materials; treatment options for varroa mites, nosema, small hive beetle, and wax moths; preventing and diagnosing AFB; and the Certified Naturally Grown certification process.
Demonstrations stations will cover the following: - sticky board test and sugar shake test; - drone brood trapping & removal; - in-hive and external traps for beetles and wax moths;
Beekeepers younger than 14 must be accompanied by an adult mentor who also registers for the workshop.
