The Seattle/King County Gang Prevention & Outreach Work Group presents Workshop 2C: A Father's Impact on At Risk Youth. This is the third of a 3-part Fatherhood Series.
Presenter(s): Dr. David Scratchley, Clinical Supervisor, The Matt Talbot Center, Seattle, WA and Dr. Jeffery Johnson, President and CEO of the National Partnership for Community Leadership (NPCL), Washington, D.C.
Description: The first of this two part workshop offers a highly interactive training designed to provide participants with an overview of the impact that drugs and alcohol use can have on efficacy of a father. Participants will learn the critical role an active father plays in the lives of adolescents, techniques for communicating, and methods by which a father can enhance their efficacy as a model for their children. The second of the two part workshop will involve Dr. Jeffrey Johnson. Dr. Johnson will provide participants a very engaging conversation about why fathers matter. Outlining key elements of why men must take their rightful place as fathers and how to develop young responsible fathers. The workshop will culminate with both Dr. Scratchley and Dr. Johnson discussing the business of fatherhood and how drug and alcohol negatively impact a father's quality and commitment to his family.

About the Instructor(s): Dr. David Scratchley holds a Ph.D. in neuroscience and psychology, including four years of post-doctoral training in clinical psychology, where his area of expertise is in the field of psychopharmacology. Currently, Dr. Scratchley serves as the Clinical Director of the Matt Talbot Center in Seattle, Washington, a state-licensed treatment center providing drug and alcohol services and mental health care to severely drug addicted and mentally ill individuals transitioning from homelessness at no cost. Previous positions included: Clinical Director of Lakeside-Milam Recovery Centers, the largest drug and alcohol treatment provider in Washington State, Director of Clinical Education for Lakeside-Milam, Director of Operations at Children's Hospital and Regional Medical Center's Clinical Trial Unit, and Clinical and Research Director of the Seattle Children's Home, a child psychiatric facility. Additionally, Dr. Scratchely was a faculty member at Seattle University from 1988-2002 in the departments of psychology and addiction studies as well as serving as the spokesman for a nationally recognized educational video series, including a new video on how children can cope with bullies called "Gum in my Hair." Dr. Scratchley writes, produces, and co-hosts weekly the popular radio show "Intervention Radio" a show devoted to public education on issues related to drug abuse, addiction, recovery, and mental health. Dr. Scratchley has also co-authored a widely used textbook on addiction, Alcoholism and Other Drug Problems, which has been referenced as a definitive source on issues of alcoholism and addiction by the United Nations. He is a well-known forensic expert witness called to in courts throughout the Northwest to research and present on the role played of addictive drugs in the commission of violent crimes.
Dr. Jeffry M. Johnson is President and CEO of the National Partnership for Community Leadership (NPCL). As a national nonprofit intermediary organization, the mission of NPCL is to strengthen the service capacity of nonprofit and community-based agencies to empower men, youth and families.
As president of NPCL, Dr. Johnson has overseen the planning and implementation of two of the nation's largest social welfare research projects involving low-income men. They are the Partners for Fragile Families Site Demonstration, and the Fathers at Work Demonstration. Since 1997, Dr. Johnson and NPCL have convened an annual international fatherhood conference that attracts of community-based and family practitioners from around the world. Dr. Johnson was also the visionary and national planning committee chair for the 100 year anniversary of Father's Day Rally held at the Lincoln Memorial on June 19, 2009 with the involvement and support of President Barack Obama.
Dr. Johnson is a nationally recognized authority in the areas of leadership, employment and training, urban poverty and youth employment. A particular focus of Dr. Johnson's work has been on the plight of African-American men and families. He is regularly invited to testify before the United States Congress on matters pertaining to fathers and strengthening families. He played a principal role in passage of the first national fatherhood legislation in Congress, The Fathers Count Bill. Dr. Johnson is also the author of several publications including Fatherhood Development: A Curriculum for Young Fathers.
Dr. Johnson has been quoted in many of the country's leading newspapers including The Los Angeles Times, The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Washington Times, and The Afro-American newspapers. Dr. Johnson has also appeared on The Tavis Smiley Show, The Michael Baisden Show, The Steve Harvey Show, CNN, C-Span, and Fox Morning News.
Dr. Johnson has an extensive civic involvement record and serves on many community boards where he has received numerous service awards. He currently serves as a member of the Board of Advisors for the Morehouse College Research Institute, The District of Columbia Commission on African-American Men and Boys, and the District of Columbia Neighborhood College wherein he serves as Board Chair. Dr. Johnson is a member of the Peoples Community Baptist Church in Silver Spring, Maryland where he serves as President of the Men's Fellowship Ministry. He is also a 2009 Peace Ambassador Award recipient for his national and international work with men and families.
Dr. Johnson has been married for 30 years to his wife Ernestine and has two children, Jeffery Jr. and Jasmin. He received his formal education at the University of Michigan where he received the Bachelor of Arts, Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in Urban Education.
