Workshop 2B: The Rites of Passage
The Seattle/King County Gang Prevention & Outreach Work Group Presents Workshop 2B: The Rites of Passage. This is the second of the 3-part Fatherhood Series.
Presenter: Gregory Davis, Liaison Community and Constituency Engagement/Technical Assistance/Systems Improvement, Casey Family Programs, Seattle, WA
Description: The use of rite of passage in fatherhood programs adds authenticity to a service provider's mission. Rite of passage is a fundamental element to develop a youth's and in turn a community's locus of control. When fathers enter into relationships with children (particularly during the ages of 8-17) after a period of absence, rite of passage serves as a classic object to support relationship building. This hands-on workshop will give service providers guidance in introducing and implementing a rite of passage project into existing fatherhood oriented programming. Attendees will also learn the basic tenants of rite of passage models allowing, them to use this time honored framework to design, implement and evaluate a project that meets the needs of funders, organizational leaders and clientele. Attendees will also develop skill in the officiating a rite of passage ceremony. Service providers are encouraged to have a team of three people a management level person, a frontline level person and a program participant.
Capacity: 40 participants
Date/Time: Thursday, May 13, 2010, 9:00 a.m. 12:00 p.m. (Registration & Refreshments 8:30 a.m.)
About the Instructor: Mr. Gregory Davis raised in Compton, California, a graduate of Seattle University ('82), is a self-proclaimed community development practitioner and has been working in this capacity for over 27 years.
He has designed, implemented, evaluated and officiated Rite of Passage programming since 1988. He specializes in integrating rite of passage programs into not-for-profit service provider organizations that are supported by public sector funding. With the origins of rite of passage being from the family and recently grass roots organizations and churches, this particular Davis expertise is important due to the prevalence of fatherhood programming's support by municipalities. This funding source requires a formalization that traditionally has not previously existed with rite of passage programs.
As a consultant in a professional capacity, with Casey Family Programs' (CFP) Systems Improvement Department (2004 to present), Davis' work involves recognizing Birth Families (particularly fathers), Alumni of care, Kin Caregivers, Foster Parents, and organizations as experts in the child welfare arena. He partners with them at a national level on policy and practice improvement in the Child Welfare area. This work supports Casey's 2020 Vision which is a strategy to reduce the number of youth in foster care (500,000+) in half by the year 2020.
Davis currently serves as president (2006 to present) of the Rainier Beach Community Empowerment Coalition (RBCEC) in a volunteer capacity. RBCEC is a neighborhood based alliance of residents (including elders and youth), organizations, institutions and businesses committed to enhancing the quality of life in Rainier Beach. RBCEC has focused on strategic and comprehensive approaches to opportunities in the neighborhood since 2003. Using "action areas" that include Education, Public Safety, Transportation, Economic Development, Family Life and the Environment, RBCEC brings people together for the benefit of the Rainier Beach neighborhood specifically.
Prior to working at Casey Family Programs, he lead a faith-based community development organization, Emerald City Outreach Ministries ECOM now Urban Impact, as its Executive Director for five years (1999 2004). Located in Rainier Beach, ECOM focused its services on the African American Family and has served the neighborhood since 1997. Davis has worked (1991 199) for the Central Area Motivation Program (CAMP) one of the oldest not for profit community action agencies in America. While at CAMP Davis with Larry Gossett, Tafuta Fundisha Bey and Gary Owens in founded and directed the Rites of Passage Experience (ROPE) program which focused on African American youth; particularly males in helping them make the transition from childhood to productive adult citizens in society.
