Club Oasis Presents: "Strange Fruit"
In Strange Fruit, independent filmmaker Joel Katz traces the roots of a protest song popularized by Billie Holiday in 1939.
The film explores how a white, Jewish schoolteacher came to write the song which Billie Holiday claimed, incorrectly, was written for her and which was later adopted by the civil rights movement.
Abel Meeropel, the man who adopted the children of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg after their executions, originally wrote the lyrics of "Strange Fruit" in the form of a poem as a response to a horrific magazine photo of a lynching.
"My father was most proud of 'Strange Fruit,' of all the things he ever did," says Michael Meeropel, the elder of the two Rosenberg children.
** Filmmaker Joel Katz will be present for a discussion after the showing. **
