Kid Cool Theremin School (for ages 7 to 12)
America's first theremin school for children, the Kid Cool Theremin School (kidcoolthereminschool.com) is dedicated to inspiring and nurturing creative learning and expression through innovative music education, art and science. It's music, science, and body awareness. It's drawing sounds. Movement and music. Hearing motion! How do the 5 senses relate to the theremin? Chrysler trains young ears by teaching the basic principles of sound and motion. The Kid Cool Theremin School nurtures an environment devoted to creative discourse and collaboration for children and parents alike, and works towards participation rather than passiveness, deeply integrating of music and art.
Cost: $25. This class is for children ages seven to twelve. Parents may attend with kids for free. This class is about 45 minutes long. Capacity is extremely limited and will sell out - so buy your ticket today! Free parking in the MOCAD lot adjacent to the Museum.
Invented 1919 by Russian electro physicist Lev Sergejewitch Termen, the theremin is the only instrument that generates sound without being touched. Notoriously hard to play, it is one of the first electronic instruments that inspired the creation of synthesizers in future generations. Historically, the theremin is one of the earliest electronic instruments, introduced to audiences in the early 20th Century. Subsequently it served as the basis from which electronic musical instruments of the 20th Century were later developed, but has often been notoriously underestimated in its own capacities in the pantheon of music instruments up until now.
Renowned as a premier thereminist, musician/composer Dorit Chrysler (doritchrysler.com) has had a prolific career as a vocalist, guitarist, keyboardist, producer, and engineer. Chrysler made her professional debut at the age of seven at Austria's Opera House Graz. She has since gone on to collaborate with the likes of Elliot Sharp, Chicks on Speed, Matt Johnson (The The), Cluster, and Gibby Haynes, amongst many others. Chrysler has also written scores for several of Jesper Just's films. Of Chrysler, Ann Magnuson exclaims, "A wizard! A true theremin star! Imagine if Marianne Faithfull and Nikola Tesla had a love child, with Jane Birkin as the nanny and Bjork as the wayward Girl Scout leader!" Dorit Chrysler comes to Detroit via support from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, as part of ADULT. Detroit House Guests, a Detroit Arts Challenge project.
